Our health care system is an international embarrassment. Just last week, Vox reported that "Utah is sending workers to Mexico to buy medicine" because prescription drug costs are ludicrously high in the United States. In fact, on average, the United States spends almost DOUBLE the amount of similar countries. That's absurd, especially since legislatures across the country can take action to make health care more affordable.

Most of you are all too familiar with rising health care and prescription drug costs. Last month, we asked this community about their health care experiences, and more than 500 of you responded with your honest and devastating stories.

Your responses are a reminder that so many of us struggle to get by every month or are at risk of having our lives upended by one accident or diagnosis. Here are some recurring stories we encountered:

* Seniors struggling on a fixed income and digging into their savings to pay drug and health care costs.
* People stretching prescriptions for asthma inhalers, diabetes drugs, and EpiPens.
* Unexpected emergencies destroying people's budgets.
* Low-income folks forgoing prescriptions or health care altogether because costs are too high.
* Working people skipping meals to pay for lifesaving health care.
* Families worrying that a disease or condition will bankrupt them or wipe away their savings.


This community opened up their hearts, which is why - with so much on the line - we're asking you to make a commitment to your fellow troublemakers and hold our elected officials accountable.
