With his right-hand man Charlie Munger, the investing legend has led one of the world’s most profitable holding companies, Berkshire Hathaway, for almost 60 years, and become one of the world’s richest men in the process. Buffett has grown from a schoolboy with a penchant for entrepreneurship (he once sold chewing gum and Coca Cola door to door) to an investment salesman, stockbroker, securities analyst, and even a student of Dale Carnegie’s public speaking course. 

But along the way, he’s been known for his alternately folksy and insightful quotes. He doesn’t have the nickname Sage of Omaha for no reason, after all. Take his most famous line: “only when the tide goes out do you discover who’s swimming naked.” It sums up financial wisdom back to the dawn of the modern age, as market bubbles form and, to paraphrase an older quote, fools rush in. Consider the crypto winter of 2022, a longtime target of Buffett and (more often) Munger. Lots of skinny-dipping was happening as the crypto market cap shrank from $3 trillion to a little over $1 trillion in just a few months.

Buffett took control of Berkshire Hathaway, then a textile manufacturing company, in 1970, and has driven it to the seventh spot on the Fortune 500 list (and 14th globally), with revenue at just over $302 billion. As for his net worth, thanks to his decades of savvy investments, it stands at roughly $118 billion as of publication.

French chess’s new queen: Iranian exiled for shunning hijab -    

An Iranian grandmaster who was once barred from competition for refusing to wear the hijab has captivated the chess community by winning the French women’s championship.

Mitra Hejazipour, 30, dedicated her victory over the French-Lithuanian finalist Deimanté Cornette this week to “all women who fight for their freedom, both Iranian and French”.

Hejazipour, who is from the northern city of Mashhad and became the Iranian women’s champion aged 19, captured global attention in 2019 when she participated at a world chess championship in Moscow without wearing a headscarf as enforced by the Iranian regime.

Fifty years since coup, Chile seeks answers about its disappeared - The Straits Times   

SANTIAGO - As Chile readies to mark 50 years since the 1973 coup against then President Salvador Allende, the country is increasingly asking a question about the thousands who disappeared in the years of military dictatorship that followed: "Where are they?".

The South American country is ramping up a hunt, with a National Search Plan launched on Wednesday by progressive President Gabriel Boric to consolidate the reams of case files and investigations, hoping to unearth new leads.

During the bloody 17-year dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet, some 40,175 people were executed, detained and disappeared, or tortured as political prisoners, according to the Ministry of Justice, based on fact finding by various commissions.
