Lord, Keep Us Free, ” we’re airing an amazing story from World War II and the years preceding it.

It’s the story of Maria Hirschmann, also called Hansi. She was a teenager when Hitler’s tanks rolled into her native country of Czechoslovakia. In less than one year, she had been brainwashed into totally committing herself to the Nazi worldview.

She believed that she was part of a German super race. She believed they were called to conquer the world and make it a better place for everybody. She also believed that God had chosen Hitler and the German race to be the saviors of the world. By the end of World War II, she was a high ranking member of the Nazi youth.

When the war suddenly ended and Hitler was dead, her life suddenly came crashing in around her. She ended up in a communist labor camp, where she and her fellow prisoners were treated with cruelty. A lot of people died.

She managed to escape and fled to East Germany, dodging bullets all the way. She finally made it to an American army base scared to death of the American soldiers because of the Nazi propaganda she’d believed. Instead, she found freedom she never believed possible, in America and in Christ.

As with those others who survived terrible experiences in World War II, Hansi’s story is one of danger, courage, and the search for truth and meaning in the face of unspeakable evil.
