Salaam,
I'm pleased to share that our Texas chapter's voter protection efforts were covered in a recent article by the Associated Press entitled, "Houstonians worry new laws will deter voters who don’t recall the hard-won fight for voting rights."
Executive Director Palwasha Sharwani, Policy Associate Niloufar Hafizi, Community and Constituent Organizer Aisha Tariq, Chapter Advisory Committee member and State Chair Emeritus AJ Durrani, and other members of the Texas team spent several days with reporter Ayanna Alexander and other AP staffers to discuss voting rights and voter protection efforts, including increasing the number of Islamic Centers used as polling places.
Other efforts include recruiting Muslims to run polling places in these Islamic Centers, developing expert in-house voter rights materials and education opportunities, creating a VoPro hotline to serve community members in their language of comfort, and coordinating with coalition partners on efforts in the most legislatively-targeted county in Texas. The Texas team is also pleased to have retained the best voter protection consultant in the state to assist with these efforts.
This work captures precisely what our organization is about: mobilizing voters and advocating for just policies that strengthen our pluralistic democracy.
As we look ahead to the 2024 presidential election, we remain steadfast in our commitments to get out the vote, engage with our community members, and protect our human and civil rights. To learn more about our current efforts, please click here.
We will continue sharing our efforts with you and hope you will join us in our hard and important work. For any questions or comments, please write to us at [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you.
