After a judge sided with the women of the Zurawski v. State of Texas case, the state immediately appealed the decision. The decision on the case would have expanded and reinforced protections for providers in the case of fetal abnormality or severe risk to the patient. Still, the state doubled down on its anti-choice rhetoric and is now throwing these specific protections into legal limbo.
From the Center for Reproductive Rights, the organization that brought forward the case: “It’s absolutely appalling that the state would appeal this ruling—a ruling meant to save women’s lives,” said Molly Duane, senior staff attorney at the Center. “It’s never been clearer that the term ‘pro-life’ is a complete misnomer. What our plaintiffs went through was pure torture, and the state is hell bent on making sure that kind of suffering continues.” |
