John,
Fossil fuels are the driver of the climate emergency, including extreme climate-driven weather events such as this summer’s deadly heat waves, hurricanes, wildfires, and floods.
Since at least the 1970s, fossil fuel corporations have known about the threat of the climate crisis, but they’ve spent billions of dollars to spread doubt and misinformation so they could keep profiting at our expense.
I’ve been holding corporate polluters accountable for years alongside environmental justice activists, and we’re not backing down in the fight to protect our communities from pollution and the climate crisis.
Sign the petition to the Department of Justice: Hold the fossil fuel industry accountable for misleading the public about climate change.
Fossil fuel companies have known that their decisions were advancing the climate crisis for over 50 years, but they’ve ignored the science and lied to the general public.
These lies have led to deadly consequences around the world, particularly for marginalized communities like mine that have been treated as dumping grounds for fossil fuel production.
The U.S. Department of Justice has sued companies for misleading the public about their products’ harms, and can sue the fossil fuel industry for violation of federal racketeering laws, truth in advertising laws, consumer protection laws, and more.
Please sign now to tell the Department of Justice to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable for its lies about climate change.
Thank you for taking action. Having grown up in Detroit by the Marathon Oil Refinery and other corporate polluters, I know how urgently our government must act to protect public health and stop climate change.
I’ve led the fight in Congress to protect our right to clean air and water, and I’ve introduced bills to secure environmental justice and take on the insurance companies and Wall Street banks that fund fossil fuel projects.
Together, we’ll keep holding corporate polluters accountable and fighting for a world where all of us can thrive.
In solidarity,
Rashida
