Dear Friends,
Please join me and other Minnesota legislators for a Town Hall on Thursday, September 14, from 6-8pm at the Stillwater Public Library. As we prepare for the new legislative session, hearing your concerns will help us form our priorities. I look forward to seeing you there!
Finally, I know many parents and school officials are concerned with the changes made to the student disciplinary policy during the 2023 legislative session. For those who have not heard, this new law is unclear and dangerously limits what school resource officers (SROs) can do to keep students and staff safe at school. This change was made without input from law enforcement and clearly disincentivizes local police and sheriffs? offices from entering into public safety agreements with schools.
Several law enforcement agencies across Minnesota have already announced that they will not be contracting with school districts to serve as SROs. As our kids return to school, their safety as well as our teachers is my top priority. I have been in contact with our local law enforcement, and I hope we can resolve this issue at the legislature either through a special session or when we return in February. All students need a secure environment to learn and thrive.
