Planned Parenthood Advocates for DC, Maryland, & NoVa
August 2023 Newsletter Edition 8
Dear Advocates,
This summer was a season of outreach, where our staff traveled across the region to connect with communities.
Maryland
Western MD Repro Justice Forum: On August 13, Rahula Strohl from our Maryland team joined a reproductive justice forum [[link removed]] hosted by the Hagerstown chapter of the Washington Area Clinic Defense Task Force. In addition to Rahula, speakers included Maryland abortion rights groups like the Baltimore Abortion Fund and Mountain Maryland Alliance for Reproductive Freedom. Participants discussed the abortion access landscape, reproductive rights in Maryland, and the work organizations are doing to protect access to care. PPADMV covered the 2022/23 elections, the long legislative and judicial roads we took to get here, and how abortion is continuously winning when voters are allowed a say.
Pride Across Maryland: PPADMV was out in full force during Pride month, partnering with Planned Parenthood of Maryland to sponsor six different Pride events across the state. Our team uplifted advocacy successes and celebrated Pride with the community. Expect to see our Maryland team at Pride SOMD on October 8 in Lexington Park, and at additional community events across Maryland.
Washington, DC
Dobbs Anniversary: In partnership with Planned Parenthood Metropolitan Washington, DC (PPMW), Planned Parenthood Action Fund, ACLU, and NARAL, PPADMV hosted a pre-rally ahead of the Women’s March [[link removed]] to mark the one-year anniversary of the overturning of Roe v. Wade and to continue our fight for abortion access. More than 250 people from across the DMV gathered to hear from PPADMV staff, participate in ACLU’s Know Your Rights training, and march together.
DC Capital Pride: PPADMV was proud to march alongside volunteers and PPMW’s Education team at the DC Capital Pride Parade to help kick off DC’s pride weekend. Over 30 people representing PPADMV and PPMW gave out swag and connected with thousands of people along the two-mile route.
Virginia
PPADMV joined forces with Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia for Fredericksburg Pride! Our DMV community organizer connected with new volunteers and storytellers in the area. Folks at the event learned about PPMW’s services and how PPADMV will be active in the upcoming Virginia election. Check out @ppadmv on Instagram [[link removed]], for ways to get involved in this year’s election!
As summer turns to fall, this is a great time to get involved. Volunteer [[link removed]] with PPADMV or donate [[link removed]*16dmse1*_ga*MTEwNjIwMjI3My4xNjU2NDI2NTcw*_gid*Mjc4NTQ3MTM3LjE2ODMxMzgyMDI.] to support our work!
In solidarity,
The PPADMV Team
