Support for LGBTQIA+ Noncitizens

Affected by the Criminal Legal System

We are litigating to overturn Matter of Y-L- with our partners National Immigration Litigation Alliance and The Legal Aid Society. Matter of Y-L- cuts off life-saving relief of withholding of removal for noncitizens who have prior drug distribution convictions. It represents one of the harsh penalties for drug sale that has torn families and communities apart without providing the safety those communities deserve.

Advocates for Immigrant Survivor of Violence

Support Fair Courts Bill

Over two dozen national and New York-based advocates for immigrant survivors of violence  called on Governor Hochul to sign the Fair Courts for Immigrant New Yorkers Act into law. Fair Courts offers critical protections for immigrants, including survivors of gender based violence. The trauma of gender-based violence can be compounded by the violence of the criminal legal and immigration systems. It’s vital that all immigrants facing charges know that a plea could lead to consequences like detention and deportation so they can seek immigration advice.

Summer Gatherings

At the end of June, IDP held a crim-imm happy hour for immigration advocates. We enjoyed seeing dozens of advocates representing offices from all five boroughs!  Be on the look out for one more gathering this year before the weather gets cold again.
