EPA significantly shrinks what qualifies as federal waters after Supreme Court rolled back protections
The EPA and US Army on Tuesday released a new rule that slashes federally protected water by more than half, following a decision by the Republican-controlled Supreme Court in May that rolled back protections for US wetlands. The rule will invalidate an earlier definition of what constitutes the so-called waters of the United States, after the Supreme Court ruled Clean Water Act protections extend only to “wetlands with a continuous surface connection to bodies that are waters of the United States in their own rights.”

Texas National Guard member fires across Rio Grande, wounds Mexican citizen
Gov. Greg Abbott's war against innocent migrants entered a new bloody phase as a National Guardsman deployed under "Operation Lone Star" opened fire across the Rio Grande River, striking an innocent Mexican man in the leg. While there is supposedly an "investigation" underway, given the governor's rhetoric and the Republican push for "deterrence" along the border, it seems far more likely that the perpetrator will receive a medal than be punished.

For the relatively measly sum of $17,000, a group of activists purchased and forgave more than $1.6 million in medical debt owed by Philadelphians, clearly demonstrating that the existence of such debt at all is, at the end of the day, a policy decision...one that could quickly be changed if we can solve the jigsaw puzzle of getting the right judges, congressmembers, Senators, and President in office at the same time.

Florida officials wanted multiple "viewpoints" on slavery
According to a new review of internal communications, Republican officials in Florida wanted to take a "both sides" approach to teaching *checks notes* SLAVERY in order to downplay the horrific manner in which Africans were kidnapped from their homes and generationally tortured in order to enrich white Americans. Before completely rejecting African American Advanced Placement courses in schools altogether, the officials complained that teaching the true history of slavery "may lead to a viewpoint of an ‘oppressor vs. oppressed’ based solely on race or ethnicity." They added that such history "may only present one side of this issue and may not offer any opposing viewpoints or other perspectives on the subject." It's unclear exactly what argument conservatives think could be made from the point of view of slave owners but what is clear is that schools in Florida are rapidly becoming nothing more than factories for aggressively ignorant far-right brainwashing.

GOP lawmakers in Wisconsin scheme to remove elections chief
In Wisconsin, GOP politicians are now moving to fire the state’s nonpartisan elections director ahead of the upcoming presidential primary in the state. Democrats are sounding the alarm and rightfully point out that the unprecedented move is really just retribution for decisions the commission made in 2020 when Donald Trump lost — decisions like not cheating and upholding democracy. Nothing matters to the GOP other than the exercise of power and seeking petty vengeance for any efforts to disrupt that power; they are not a serious political party and should not be treated as such.

The virulently MAGA Republican candidate went as limp as mom's spaghetti after the legendary Detroit rapper hit him with a cease and desist letter for performing "Lose Yourself" in front of a crowd of Republicans. Ramaswamy said that he will no longer perform Eminem's music, but then attacked the singer for supporting the "establishment." Of course, the only establishment that really matters here is the one that Ramaswamy supporters, a conservative political project that immiserates millions by depressing wages, cutting social programs, and impoverishing the very people that Eminem grew up with.
