Our Revolution is endorsing Jovanka Beckles for State Senate in California’s District 7 — and we are very excited about this race!

Our Revolution endorsed Jovanka in her successful campaigns for Richmond City Council, and she’s been twice backed by Bernie Sanders - including in 2014 when she took on Chevron for polluting her community and WON!
As a city counselor, she was able to increase the minimum wage, introduce and pass Ban the Box, support local labor unions, advocate for and pass rent control, hold corporate polluters accountable, and make Richmond a sanctuary city.
“These were progressive policies that I continued to push for even after being told they would be impossible to do on the local level,” Jovanka said on a recent Our Revolution call.

Our Revolution also endorsed Jovanka for the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District Board of Directors. She ensured that transit workers received hazard pay during the pandemic and she has continued her support of pro-worker and pro-labor union policies by working closely with the labor movement. As a member herself of Teamsters Local 856, Jovanka can be found on picket lines at a moment’s notice.
Jovanka would be the first black candidate to represent this district in nearly 40 years. She brings lived experience as a Black, Queer, immigrant, Latinx woman and a voice that is needed in state government.
“I am the only Black female candidate who is vying for a seat at the table,” she said. There are currently only two Black Americans out of 40 representatives for the whole state.
“I’m running because we need bold leadership willing to take action for what is right—who will be courageous on climate, healthcare, criminal justice reform, housing, taxing the rich, women’s and worker’s rights, and more. I’m proud to be part of this movement for change, for a society that puts people over profit.”
