Over the past few months we’ve seen another uptick of crime across our city - shootings and property crime are becoming far too familiar occurrences. The current crime-reduction strategies in our city and county clearly aren’t working. And I’ve had enough. Enough of the crime. Enough of the lawlessness. I am ready to fight for our community to make the changes needed to deliver a safer, stronger, more prosperous Memphis.
And while the Mayor cannot single-handedly solve these issues, the Mayor can set the tone. As Mayor, I will use my negotiation skills and my ability to create high performing teams to create systems and partnerships that work to strategically combat the issues that are derailing our city’s progress. That means asking the police and courts to find new ways to work together. That means asking community groups and nonprofits to help provide educational and recreational options for teens. And that means calling on more people to serve as mentors for our youth. Because right now, our future is in their hands.
We’ve all read the headlines, it isn’t just Memphis. Crime is rising all across the country. Nationally, auto theft rates are up 33% over the same period last year, but in Memphis those numbers are up 120%, and that is simply unacceptable. So, no, it isn’t just us, but Memphis is in crisis. And I am fighting for Memphis. Please join me.
Let’s make a change. Let’s fight crime with community-focused strategies that create collaboration between government and non-profit agencies. Let’s ask more from our crime fighting agencies and our courts. Let’s lean into economic and educational development that will lead to higher wages and more opportunity for our people. Together, let’s forge a path toward a safer, stronger, better Memphis.
Let’s go!
