Jack, for decades, news outlets relied on advertising to cover expenses. That had to change because Big Tech like Google, Amazon, and Facebook have sucked up a constantly growing share of that revenue, leaving little left over for smaller businesses, like Daily Kos. In hopes of making up some of that lost advertising revenue, some news media outlets have charged for exclusive access to the news through costly subscriptions and paywalls.
Daily Kos went in a different direction and asked our community of readers and activists for support. As Michael points out in the email below, if everyone reading this email gave just $1.18, we would have crushed our August fundraising goal, but not everyone is in a position to give—and that's ok.
It's also the reason why Daily Kos hasn't erected a paywall to make up lost revenue: We believe strongly that everyone should have access to the news and our content, regardless of their ability to pay.
Please help keep Daily Kos accessible to everyone. We still need to raise $66,979 in a matter of days. Support Daily Kos and the work we do every day by making a donation of $5 or whatever amount is meaningful to you.

Thanks for all you do,

Jack, there's no easy way to say it: We're coming up short.
Daily Kos needs to raise $165,128 before the end of the month. Can you donate $5 right now to help us close the books on August?

That might sound like a big number—and it is, in a way. But here's another way to think about it: If everyone reading this email right now gave just $1.18, we'd hit our goal today. For real, the whole fundraising drive would be over. Mission accomplished.
There's a catch, though. Not everyone reading this is going to donate—and that's fine. We understand that not everyone can donate. We're still committed to bringing you the Daily Kos content you know and love every single day for free. No paywall, no exclusive content for people who can pay more, just free for everyone who wants progressive, independent news. We like it that way.
So, if you're one of the lucky ones who can afford to give, please take a minute right now to donate $5 to keep Daily Kos online and free for all.

Thank you,
