Somehow it’s already back to school season. Every mama knows the conflicted feelings this time of year brings: I'm full of nostalgia for my baby who is growing up too fast, as well as pride for the smart, confident kid she's becoming as she prepares to walk into her "big kid school" for the first time. But, unfortunately, American mamas these days are also full of fear.

According to gunviolencearchive.org, the U.S. had 16 mass shootings last week, and just yesterday our country reacted to the news that there was an active shooter on campus at UNC. Guns are the leading cause of death for American children and are also the largest contributor of preventable death in this country.

I would be lying if I said fear about my daughter’s safety does not cross my mind as I watch her walk into her classroom in the morning. Like so many parents, I am horrified by the extremist policies that have made their way into our public schools.

It’s not just gun violence. From attacks on trans youth, to book bans, to legislation that threatens to arrest teachers, Republicans are pushing for policies that are dangerous and that are failing our kids. This is why it’s so critical that we change who is in office.

If we win key races in Congress and gain back Democratic control, we finally have a shot at passing sweeping gun reform. If we take back our school boards, we can protect trans kids and ensure our schools allow them to be who they are without facing discrimination. We can elect leaders who will put banned books back on the shelves.

When I drop my daughter off at school, I’m reminded of the work ahead and all we have to fight for. Vote Mama has made more than 80 endorsements this year in key races up and down the ballot, and together we can elect a pipeline of Democratic moms who are committed to fixing our nation’s broken policies and keeping our kids safe. We’re fighting to build the future our kids deserve.
