Dear John,
Being able to travel is not something I take for granted. Because of my disability, I’ll one day need a wheelchair to leave my home safely. When that day comes, I want to know that I – and my wheelchair – will be safe while I travel.
Unfortunately, that just isn’t the case right now.
Over 11,000 wheelchairs and mobility aids were damaged by airlines last year. That’s about 31 a day! We need better care – we need this to change for us to survive. The good news is that Congress is currently considering a bill to protect disabled people and their mobility aids when they travel.
Let’s keep up the pressure to make travel more accessible. Tell American, Delta, Southwest and United to install wheelchair friendly-seats and make flights more accessible for disabled people! [[link removed]]

When we travel, disabled people are navigating a system that just wasn’t built for us. Airlines must do better to accommodate disabled people because mobility aids, which are often custom and cost thousands of dollars, are crucial to disabled people and essentially function as an extension of our bodies by being central to our independence.
The stakes of this issue are dire.
A few years ago, disability rights advocate Engracia Figueroa passed away as a result of the injuries she sustained when United Airlines destroyed her wheelchair after she was returning from a Care Can’t Wait event. This is horrible and was preventable – nobody should have to risk their mobility, their independence, or their lives for air travel.
Take action now and call on American, Delta, Southwest and United Airlines to make their planes more accommodating for wheelchair users and all disabled people! [[link removed]]
Together, we’re building power in the movement to provide better care for everyone. With your help, we can make sure accessibility is a key part of that fight – so we can get closer to a future with paid leave, affordable child care, and accessible aging and disability care for all of us.
Thank you for joining us in this fight.
With care,
Tory Cross, Associate Director of Federal Policy & Government Relations
