Tennessee House Republicans are once again silencing the voice of opposition to their extremist agenda. Last night, during a tense debate over school safety and the need for gun reform, Republicans voted to ban Rep. Justin Jones – a previous target of Republican attacks – from speaking or debating on the bills that were being considered for the day after he criticized Republicans for not including meaningful gun safety reform while addressing school safety. Today, accomplishing nothing, House Republicans forced the legislature to adjourn until January.
These are the kinds of extreme tactics Republicans have resorted to when their agenda is challenged. But we supported the “Tennessee Three” (including Rep. Jones) when they were previously expelled by House Republicans, and we won't stand idly by while Republicans continue their attempts to suppress democracy. People For the American Way is committed to holding these authoritarian politicians accountable and ensuring that every voice is heard.

From fighting for affordable health care to advocating for educational equity, Justin has been a driving force in advancing progressive policies in Tennessee.
And while these events may be taking place in Tennessee, we know full well that other Republican-controlled legislatures around the nation are watching and taking notes to see just how much they can get away with if they go unchallenged or change the rules in their favor.
Together, we can build a stronger democracy in Tennessee and around the nation by supporting leaders like Justin Jones who are unafraid to challenge Republican obstruction and fight for what is right.
