Dear Neighbor, During the August work period, I can be found in our office taking meetings and being out in the community. Here's a few highlights from last week. | Meeting with LGBTQ Center of Long Beach | The LGBTQ Center of Long Beach helps over 25,000 people from Long Beach and the surrounding communities through youth services, HIV & STI testing, legal assistance, domestic violence, and more. Last week we met to discuss the importance of safe spaces and allyship for the LGBTQ+ community. It is essential that we fund and protect safe spaces like the Center to ensure support services for the LGBTQ+ community. This is more important now with the rise in hate crimes and attacks against the LGBTQ community. | Just last week in our backyard, I was horrified to learn about the hateful shooting in Lake Arrowhead of Laura Carleton. Laura was a staunch LGBTQ+ ally who was shot because she hung a Pride flag outside her clothing store and refused to take it down. In Congress, I will continue to fight to provide resources and protect our LGBTQ+ communities. | $1.5 Million in Funding to Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator | This week, we celebrated the $1.5 MILLION in federal funds I secured in last year's government funding bill for the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI)! I was joined at our ceremonial check presentation event by Port of Los Angeles Commissioner Lucille Roybal-Allard Commissioner Diane Middleton, Commissioner Lee Williams, and LACI President Matt Petersen. This funding will be used to install electric vehicle chargers capable of charging an electric drayage truck in under 30 minutes! | The movement of goods at our ports is one of the largest sources of pollution in the LA region. It is critical that we replace the thousands of diesel drayage trucks to clean electric trucks to help fight the climate crisis and deliver cleaner air for our communities These chargers will also help accelerate the transition to zero-emission trucks and bring clean energy to our district. | Student Loan Payments Resume in October. Here's What to Do | President Biden announced last week his new plan to help students & graduates get relief from their student loan debt: the SAVE Plan. Under SAVE, many low-income borrowers will see their payments cut to $0 per month. You can learn more, see if you're eligible, and apply to SAVE here. | Friday, August 25, was Reproductive Freedom Day, a day where we recognize the fight of millions of people across America to make decisions about their own reproductive health. I visited Planned Parenthood in Long Beach, toured the facility, and spoke with their Chief External Affairs Officer about how critical it is to maintain access to comprehensive reproductive care services, including birth control and abortion. | We must continue to fight to ensure that everyone has access to the care they need. | New Deadline for Veterans Applying for PACT Act Care | Veterans: if you deployed to a combat zone, never enrolled in VA health care, and left active duty between September 11, 2001 and October 1, 2013, you are eligible to enroll directly in VA healthcare without first applying for VA benefits. The deadline to apply is September 30, 2023. This special enrollment period is part of the PACT Act, which President Biden signed into law last year. You can read about the PACT Act and sign up for health care and benefits here or by calling 1-800-MYVA411. | Highlights from our Senior Briefing & Health Fair! | It's been three weeks since we held the LARGEST Annual Senior Health Fair and Luncheon at the Carson Community Center, and I'm still amazed at our turnout of over 1,200 older Americans! Check out some of the highlights in this video! Thank you to everyone who came out this year, from our hardworking vendors and caterers, our volunteers and staff, our community leaders and all of the older Americans who spent the day with us - and a special thank you to our guest, Congressman Adam Schiff who stopped by to share his thoughts on helping seniors in California. I can't wait for next year's Senior Health Fair & Luncheon! | Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán Member of Congress | Sign up for my newsletter to get updates on this issue and others! | Washington D.C.
