Kelly knew that becoming a Justice Ambassador was a calling she could not ignore.
Her fourth-grade teacher, Mr. M., had planted a seed in Kelly’s heart to look beyond herself and to serve as an agent of change.
One day, Mr. M. gave his class the option of writing to people in prison if they wanted to. And Kelly chose to do it.
Fast forward to 2019. Kelly reached out to Mr. M. to ask if he remembered all those years ago when their class sent letters to prisoners—an assignment that made a profound impact on Kelly. She explained that she felt called to advocate for her former classmate, Charlie, who had been convicted of a crime and sentenced to life without parole shortly after graduating high school.
During the conversation, Mr. M. recalled the men the class wrote to, mentioning a name that stopped Kelly cold: Timmy J.
Kelly had an incarcerated cousin named Timmy J., whom she had heard stories of her entire life. This was the same Timmy J. to whom Mr. M. had been writing and ministering for all those years. As it turned out, Timmy J. had just been released on parole.
Kelly began to contemplate the disparity of sentencing between Charlie and her cousin: the same crime with vastly different sentences.
Shortly afterward someone told her, “You might want to check out Prison Fellowship.”
Today, Kelly has been a Justice Ambassador with Prison Fellowship for about three years. In that time, she has written letters to her governor, U.S. senators, and the president. She even met with U.S. Rep. Jason Crow’s legislative office to advocate for the Law Enforcement De-escalation Training Act. Kelly’s goal is to be a part of supporting policies and legislation that will change the current process and provide more hope and restoration for families, communities, and prisoners.
