Promoting Safer and More Humane Environments: The Imperative of Studying Restrictive Housing in Corrections

The research is clear?restrictive housing is not an effective deterrent against misconduct or violence and?actually increases?the likelihood of reoffending.

Armed with this knowledge, NIJ Director Nancy La Vigne and Federal Bureau of Prisons Director Colette Peters have?announced a joint effort?to study and reduce the use of restrictive housing in federal prisons.?
