In-person at the Manny Cantor Center

197 E Broadway

New York City

Hi John,

This September marks a significant milestone as all New York schools will begin the academic year fully funded for the first time. This achievement owes its success to the dedicated efforts of AQE and our steadfast supporters - you!

Please join us on Thursday, October 5 from 5:30 to 8:30pm ET at the Manny Cantor Center to commemorate this historic win. Come honor those whose unwavering dedication to New York’s students has played a pivotal role in our collective progress.

One of the evening's honorees will be Jamaal Bowman, the US. Representative for New York's 16th congressional district since 2021. A longtime friend of AQE's, prior to entering politics, Congressman Bowman had a long career as an educator and advocate for public education justice in New York City.

Bowman grew up in public housing on the Upper East Side and became a public school teacher in the Bronx in the early 2000s. There, he served as a fourth grade crisis intervention teacher at PS 90 before founding Cornerstone Academy for Social Action (CASA) in 2009. As CASA’s principal, he focused on implementing restorative justice programs, arts education (championing S.T.E.A.M. over S.T.E.M., and addressing systemic inequities facing students of color and those coming from lower-income households. These efforts solidified his reputation as a leading critic of high-stakes standardized testing, culminating in a bill proposed this congressional session.

Come celebrate the courageous commitment to social justice by Congressman Bowman and others, as we come together to honor this momentous victory and look ahead to the enduring transformation we stand united to achieve!
