Did you know meat and poultry corporations can knowingly sell you food contaminated by salmonella bacteria?
You read that right – meat and poultry corporations are legally allowed to sell you products they know are contaminated with salmonella!
Something needs to change. That’s why our affiliate organization, Food & Water Watch, is bringing people together to demand the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) do more to protect our food. Are you in?
Currently, the USDA lets meat and poultry companies follow voluntary standards for the levels of salmonella that can be present in their products, but these standards are not enforceable. This is absurd.
The Centers for Disease Control estimates that each year due to salmonella in food like meat and poultry 26,500 people end up in the hospital; 420 people die, and salmonella contamination triggers over 100 outbreaks in our country.
Consumers should feel safe buying meat stamped ‘USDA Inspected and Passed.’ But meat and poultry corporations disagree – they think that food safety is your problem, not theirs. It’s time to tell them they’re wrong.
