Food and aid pile up at Niger's border as sanctions bite

Around 4.3 million people in Niger are in need of humanitarian assistance, the vast majority of whom are women and children. The ongoing political crisis in Niger along with sanctions and border closures are already exacerbating these needs and driving up food insecurity, which has already hit unprecedented levels amongst Niger’s population.

Any increase in conflict, crisis, and displacement will adversely affect women and children, who make up more than 80% of the people currently displaced.

At this critical moment, any suspension or interruption of assistance will have dramatic implications for the lives of women and girls, and could roll back hard-won gains made over the years, which will not easily be clawed back.

Will you make a gift to help build up resources for women and girls living through conflict in Niger and around the world? Our Humanitarian Response Plan is only 44% funded, so your gifts are urgently needed today.

UNFPA is currently struggling with low stocks of critical sexual and reproductive health supplies due to the impact of closures of the border and air space.

If funding to sexual and reproductive health programs is suspended in Niger:

A stable workplace has given these women more than just an income but a way out. One survivor explains, "These skills help us think there is hopefully a brighter future."

  • More than 26,000 women will give birth without access to essential medicines, supplies, or a qualified health worker at a UNFPA-supported health facility.
  • Over 1,300 pregnant women and girls will be unable to access emergency obstetric and newborn care, putting their lives and their newborns at risk.
  • There will be more than 6,000 unwanted pregnancies and induced, unsafe abortions which could have catastrophic consequences for women and girls, including death.

With funding from private donors, like you, UNFPA will continue to deliver essential reproductive health medicines and supplies despite ongoing challenges and deploy midwives to assist safe births.

But in order to reach more women with income and a way out of dangerous situations, more gifts are urgently needed to support these life-altering services.

Deliver lifesaving care to women and girls whose needs are exacerbated by conflict and crisis. Millions are counting on your generous support.

Thank you for being there for women and girls.
