Are you on Threads?
Whether you’re a frequent user or just hearing about it for the first time now, we want to catch you up on growing concerns over how Threads — or any other shiny new social media platforms — will impact our democracy.
Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, launched their latest social network Threads this summer — a platform for sharing text-based posts, photos, and short videos. In the first few days after its launch, it accumulated tens of millions of users — gaining a reputation as the fastest-growing app in history. But it might also gain notoriety as the next ground zero for election disinformation.
Nearly two months later, and with local election cycles in full swing around the country, Meta still hasn’t released their policies or plan for combating the spread of harmful election disinformation on Threads. As we’ve seen on social media platforms like Facebook in past elections, Threads users could share false claims about voting and candidates — and those posts could go viral, ultimately manipulating voters and impacting voter turnout. To top it off, recent reports show that Meta laid off staff from its teams that handle election disinformation.
Threads shows us how quickly a new network can get off the ground (and onto over 100 million phones) — and we know this issue is bigger than any individual platform, which is why we’ve been working to combat disinformation across the internet as new social networks emerge.
Fair Fight Action has worked to combat disinformation narratives online — but we need Big Tech companies like Meta, and CEOs like Mark Zuckerberg, to do their part in preventing this disinformation from surfacing in the first place.
And it’s going to take each of us raising our voices to bring attention to this critical issue. Add your name if you agree: Big Tech CEOs need to implement and maintain strong anti-disinformation policies on their social media platforms — to protect the future of our democracy. [[link removed]]
