John,
Across the country, students are headed back to school. But, at the federal level, we’re seeing a relentless attack on public education.
“When 161 House Republicans voted earlier this year to eliminate all K-12 funding at the Department of Education, I was horrified, but that was just the beginning. Now, in the midst of a teacher shortage, they have introduced a bill that would kick 224,000 teachers from classrooms. We are witnessing a widespread attack on education at all levels that should horrify all of us.” -
Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03), House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member1
Already, we’ve sent more than 27,800 letters to representatives demanding they reject cuts to education in the fiscal year 2024 funding bill. Keep the pressure on! Click here to send a message directly to your representative today.
TAKE ACTION
The House bill would:
-
Eliminate access to early childhood education for 51,000 children through cuts to Head Start;
-
Remove teachers from classrooms in every state, impacting low-income students and communities through cuts to K-12 education;
-
And, it would eliminate English Language Acquisition services for more than 5 million English learners―a direct attack on immigrant families.
Federal dollars for education help states and local communities fill in the funding gaps for primary and secondary education for low-income communities. And the learning gaps are stark now, with worsening test scores during the pandemic and a wide gap between Black and brown students and white students.2
Our students, teachers, and families deserve better. These young people are the future of our society and economy, and if we don’t make up for lost ground, societal, racial, and income gaps are only going to increase.
Click here to write to your representative today and demand Congress reject cuts to education!
Thank you for fighting for our children and our future.
