Hello,

This week, I advise on why you should not suppress your emotions, but rather, what you should do with them instead. Then, my daughter Mikhaila joins me to discuss the Ontario College of Psychologists’ verdict. From the archives, I revisit a lecture about making the most of opportunities.

Advice

Identify Your Emotions To Help Your Heart

You have to be able to wield a big stick and speak softly. That is how you take your aggression—which is an absolutely necessary part of your psyche—and manifest it into a sophisticated means of dealing with the world. You do not just suppress it.

You say, “Well, I should be able to put up with it or I wish I was not so angry.” Forget that. All that will happen is your blood pressure will stay high, and you will die of a heart attack because anger, for example, is a very toxic emotion. It causes heart damage over time. It is the only emotion that we really know that has been linked to things like cardiovascular risk. Anger is toxic because it is like you are driving a car; you are stepping on the gas and pushing on the brake at the same time because anger tells you to run away and to attack at the same time because you do not know what is going to happen. It really amps up the physiological demand on your body, including your heart and your musculature.

If you stay like that for 10 years, you are going to age 20 years. That is a bad plan. So you take your underground emotions, and you integrate them into a sophisticated reality.

In Jordan’s series “On Marriage,” he discusses the fundamentals of relationships, the critical aspects of marriage, and the beauty that comes from this commitment. Most unique in this series are the personal stories Jordan shares of his and Tammy’s marriage in these three episodes. Substitutes For Religion Are Meaningless

More academically oriented thinkers have proposed critiques of religion that reduce it to a single dimension, and then criticize it along that dimension. The atheist types like Richard Dawkins tend to think that belief in God is like belief in a stateable proposition: Is God real, like is a table real? And it is not obvious that that is the proper way to formulate that issue. You can make it absurd almost immediately by reducing it to that sort of representation, but there are a multitude of functions that religious traditions serve.
