My team reached out to you yesterday about this Thursday’s upcoming end-of-month fundraising deadline. Before I ask if you can help us reach our grassroots goal, I hope you’ll let me explain just how much your contribution matters at a time like this.
When I first ran to represent Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional District, it was no secret I was an underdog candidate. But as a lifelong resident of the district, a state legislator, and a committed community organizer, activist and advocate for social justice, I knew our communities deserved better representation in Washington, and I was committed to deliver.
We faced an uphill battle in 2022. Despite an onslaught of outside spending from super PACs, we won one of the most expensive and fiercely contested Democratic primaries in the country, going up against a moderate candidate endorsed by the former long-time representative of this seat.
After overcoming some ugly attacks in the primary race, we faced even more in the general, with right-wing groups like AIPAC spending millions of dollars to stop our people-powered campaign in its tracks.
But together, we organized and built a multigenerational, multiracial movement without donations from corporate PACs to elect the first Black woman to represent Pennsylvania in Congress and achieve a momentous win for progressives. We did that, together, and showed that Western PA is fighting for the future of our whole country.
Since our 2022 victory, I’ve fought tooth and nail to bring real, progressive change to Western PA and fight fascism in Congress. As a result, our enemies are already preparing for 2024 in an attempt to make me a one-term representative and push us backward.
Without a doubt, this re-election race is going to be another uphill battle. But I know that with people-power behind us, we can and will defeat the odds once again.
The 2022 victory wasn’t just a win for me, but for every single member of our community and the progressive movement as a whole. Let’s keep moving forward and fighting for the future our entire country deserves.
