One of the GOP’s outrageous arguments against student debt relief is that
it would be unfair to help tens of millions of people when others have
already paid off their debt. Some of my fellow Squad members are even
being criticized for their advocacy on debt relief because they still have
unpaid student loans.

But plenty of student loan cancellation advocates have no current student
loans to pay off — including me. While I’m grateful to have been able to
pay off my loans, I know firsthand how this debt can create impossible
choices and deny families the ability to buy a home, build wealth, and
more.

Like so many Black women – who are disproportionately impacted by the
student debt crisis – I defaulted on my loans before I was able to pay
them off. That experience has only strengthened my commitment to this
fight.

I believe the people closest to the pain should be the closest to the
power. There should be even MORE representatives in Congress who share the
lived experience of their constituents and understand what their struggles
are like, including the burden of student loan debt.

[ [link removed] ]I’m going to keep up the fight for student loan debt cancellation for
ALL. If you’re with me, pitch in $3 or whatever you can
afford today.
