Dear John,

Earlier this year, Burlington, VT and Redondo Beach, CA voted for ranked choice voting (RCV) – marking 22 city ballot measure wins in a row!

The streak could grow this fall: Read on to learn where RCV is on the ballot in 2023, where our movement is playing defense, and what’s ahead for 2024.

RCV on the ballot in 2023

Three major Michigan cities are voting on RCV this November – East Lansing, Kalamazoo, and Royal Oak. Passing these ballot measures would make Michigan a national leader in the better elections movement, and Rank MI Vote is leading the charge! Its volunteers have collected thousands of signatures across all three cities to place RCV on the ballot. Help them make sure RCV WINS this fall!

Defending RCV in Minnetonka, MN

Everywhere it’s used, voters like and understand RCV – and Minnetonka was no exception when it used RCV for the first time in 2021. Most voters ranked a winning candidate – the exact kind of consensus-building that RCV promotes, and one of the reasons why it’s the fastest-growing nonpartisan voting reform in the nation.

That success hasn’t stopped opponents of RCV from placing a measure on the ballot to repeal the reform. FairVote Minnesota is leading the campaign for a “no” vote, and they’re looking for volunteers to help.

RCV on the horizon in 2024

Next year will likely be even bigger, with Oregon and Nevada both voting on RCV. Passage of those measures would double the number of states using RCV, the largest expansion in American history. The states are home to more than seven million people combined.

Nevada already voted in favor of RCV last year (state law requires citizen-initiated constitutional amendments to pass twice in a row), and so did Oregon’s largest city and county.

It's not just Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon, and Nevada – dozens more cities are already on their path to RCV ballot measures in the coming years! This pipeline of interest is generated both by the efforts of grassroots advocates and by interested local officials – a great sign of our movement's growth! We’ll keep you updated as these efforts develop, and let you know when and where it’s time for all hands on deck.

Thank you for supporting FairVote and RCV. With your support, we are poised to win big in 2023 and 2024!
