A Modest Proposal: Send Public Officials Who Censor Speech to Free-Speech School |
Justice: School officials who censored a student at Southern Illinois University for saying things her classmates disagreed with received First Amendment training from the student’s lawyers as part of a settlement agreement with the university.
- This sort of training should be the norm for censors, argue Senior Legal Fellow GianCarlo Canaparo and Senior Research Associate Seth Lucas.
- “It will remind them of the uncomfortable consequences of bad behavior. And it will make it easier to get punitive damage awards against them in future lawsuits,” write Canaparo and Lucas.
