Friends —

This weekend was one of the deadliest in the history of our country. Within 13 hours, more than two dozen lives were lost in both El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio, bringing the total to 251 mass shootings in the US this year. Violence in places like our own UNC Charlotte and beyond must stop, as innocent people are being senselessly attacked.

At times like this, we often ask why and seek truth in the events. At best, we cope with the sadness of another mass shooting. At worst, we wait for our government to do something because we know that assault rifles in particular are too accessible. We need action and common-sense gun reform now.

To my colleagues, Dayton Mayor Whaley and El Paso Mayor Dee Margo, we open our hearts and support to you and your cities. As a city, Charlotte stands with the people of El Paso and Dayton.

Sincerely,

Vi
