Hey there, please don’t click away from this email.
In a tragic and, unfortunately, predictable turn of events, the United
States just surpassed 400 mass shootings in 2023.^1
This is a harrowing epidemic — one that is all-too avoidable. But thanks
to heavily funded right-wing efforts, most attempts are rejected. Only 10
states nationwide have bans on assault weapons.^2 For the rest of the
country, assault weapons continue to cause terror and tragedy without any
regulation.
It affects millions of Americans, and more directly, young adults, as gun
violence is the number one cause of death among children and teens. We
cannot continue to allow more and more of our youth to die every year when
the government has the power and tools to put an end to it. Congress needs
to pass legislation to get assault weapons and high-capacity magazines off
our streets.

weapons immediately.

Not only are assault weapons more dangerous because they are
semi-automatic guns, but they are even more lethal compared to handguns.
Each round fired from an assault weapon has up to four times the muzzle
energy of a typical gun, inflicting greater damage to the human body.
With that much lethal power and efficiency, mass shooters are able to
wreak havoc in schools, shopping malls, concerts, highways, places of
worship, and many other places.
We know that banning assault weapons will decrease gun violence and
protect people in this country because it has been done before. When the
federal assault weapon ban took effect in 1994, the risk of a person in
the United States dying from a mass shooting was reduced by 70%.^3
Congress failed to extend that ban in 2004, and our country has suffered
the brunt of that since.
With multiple high-profile mass shootings and an obscene number of
casualties, gun violence with assault weapons can no longer continue.
Congress must act immediately.
