Growing up, I never expected to be a member of Congress. It had never happened for a kid with a story like mine.

When I was just a young child, my family escaped the Somali Civil War and took sanctuary in a Kenyan refugee camp for four years.

We didn't always have enough food or running water, but we did always hold out hope that one day we'd be able to start a new life in the United States. And we did — right here in Minneapolis.

My community here taught me that we look out for one another. We work hard for a fair wage, and our shared success allows all of us to thrive. And we do our part to leave the world better than we found it.

So when the opportunity came to serve the people who took my family in and gave us a home here, I stepped up and ran for Congress.

I never imagined that I would become the first African-born member of Congress, the first woman of color to represent Minnesota in Congress, or that tens of thousands of people across America would be with me along the way.

If you told me when I first arrived in Minneapolis that this is how life would unfold, I wouldn’t have believed you.

But it always comes back to community for me. Everything we've accomplished has only ever been possible because we’ve done it together. I am incredibly grateful for the support from people like you.

But our work is far from over. If we're going to continue building progressive power and fighting for policies and ideas that put working people first, it's going to take every single one of us. So I have to ask:
