Work progressing well on new Beechdale Wigman cycle route
Works have begun to remove the central reservation as the first step in creating a segregated, safe cycle route in Bilborough.
Once this is completed, giving our team more space to work safely, works will begin on the new cycle paths beginning on the northern side.

Young people leaving the care of Nottingham City Council are to benefit from free travel on local public transport to help them get started in the next stage of their lives.
A pilot scheme starting this summer will provide care leavers with Robin Hood Network Cards – which allow access to any bus, tram and train operator within the Nottingham metropolitan area.
This trial, which it’s hoped will run for two years, will form part of the council’s wider ‘Local Offer’ for care experienced young people, providing support with accommodation, employment, education and training, health and wellbeing, relationships and participation in society.
Information gathered from this pilot will be used to measure its impact, and will hopefully be instrumental in securing a long-term commitment to support all care leavers nationally.

New wheelchair and pushchair friendly paths open up Colwick Country Park for more people to enjoy
Nottingham City Council has completed major improvements to footpaths at Colwick Country Park.
The project, paid for through funding secured from the Transforming Cities and European Regional Development Funds, began in September 2022 and finished ahead of schedule in mid-August 2023.
Colwick Country Park is one of Nottingham’s most beautiful and popular parks, with its large lake, woodland, marina and wildlife areas and is now more accessible than ever.
The popular walk around the lake became extremely muddy at times particularly during the winter months, making it difficult for park users, including Colwick parkrunners, and impossible for those using pushchairs, wheelchairs or bikes.
It was planned that the project could add 1.5km of paved footpaths, improving access and use of the park for wheelchair users, pushchair users and cyclists, but Nottingham City Council have now completed over 4.5k of footpaths using the funding, after seeing the impact and positive feedback that resulted.
The new paths are 3 metres wide, giving enough room for cyclists, pedestrians, wheelchair users and pushchair users to enjoy the park.

Road and Local Transport Minister Richard Holden visited Nottingham to learn how the city’s award-winning sustainable transport system is bucking national trends
Representatives from the Department for Transport joined the Minister to tour locations for an insight into Nottingham’s award-winning sustainable transport including the tram, wider public transport network and other transport initiatives, and to hear about the city’s plans for the future, including the redevelopment of the Broad Marsh area which has already seen a range of transport improvements.
The visit also gave an opportunity to discuss and lobby for Government funding to support tram systems like Nottingham Express Transit (NET) after a post-Covid fall in passenger numbers, along the same lines as additional funding that’s been provided for buses.

Later in August, we were honoured to welcome visitors from City of Edinburgh Council
Councillor Cammy Day, Leader of City of Edinburgh Council was joined by colleagues working across Transport, Climate and Policy to learn about how we’ve made progress on those areas here in Nottingham, as well as initiatives such as our ebikes, escooter trial, our tram network, the Workplace Parking Levy, our Carbon Neutral 2028 ambition, and our strategies for the future of transport in Nottingham.
Nottingham City Council Leader Councillor David Mellen and Portfolio Holder for Highways, Transport and Planning, Councillor Angela Kandola, hosted the visitors, who heard that an excellent public transport network is especially important for Nottingham due to our low car ownership levels.
Our City of Edinburgh colleagues also heard about our pioneering Workplace Parking Levy (WPL) which has led to over £1billion direct and indirect investment in our city over the last decade and helped Nottingham reduce congestion growth by 47%, saving 5780 tonnes of C02.
Carbon Neutral Nottingham website launched to support city-wide ambition
A new website has been launched by Nottingham City Council to support Nottingham’s ambition to be the first carbon neutral city in the UK by 2028.
The Earth’s average temperature has increased dramatically over the past 100 years, and 2022 was the UK’s hottest year on record. Tackling the climate crisis is one of Nottingham City Council’s key priorities, and the Carbon Neutral Nottingham website brings information about what is happening to make the city more sustainable together in one place.
The website aims to offer practical advice and opportunities for residents to reduce their own carbon footprints. There are dedicated sections for each of the nine key themes of the city’s Carbon Neutral Action Plan – Buildings, Energy, Transport, Waste, Water, Stuff, Protecting the City, Nature, and Removing Carbon From the Atmosphere.

Government begins Highway Code campaign
Following changes to the Highway Code from January 2023, the Government has restarted it's THINK! road safety campaign to help remind people to 'travel like you know them'.
People are again being encouraged to:
- give priority at junctions to people cycling straight ahead and people waiting to cross or already crossing the road
- pass horse riders at under 10mph and allow at least 2 metres of space and keep to a low speed when passing people walking on the road
- leave at least 1.5 metres when overtaking cyclists at speeds of up to 30mph, and give them more space when overtaking at higher speeds
- remember that people cycling may ride 2 abreast or in the centre of the lane if it is safer to do so, pulling in when safe to allow vehicles to overtake
