Hi,

In 2016, Donald Trump lost the popular vote for president by nearly 3
million votes — and he still became the president. It happened in 2000 as
well, when George W. Bush won the White House despite getting 543,000
fewer votes.

The problem is the Electoral College, which has created a government by
minority that is undermining our whole democracy. And unless it is
reformed in time for the 2024 election, it could easily deliver the White
House to a candidate who loses the popular vote again — and our democracy
might not survive another disaster like that.

The good news is that we have a plan to end the Electoral College, and
it’s closer than ever to succeeding.

The National Popular Vote compact is a bottom-up, state-by-state strategy
whereby states choose to award their electoral votes to the winner of the
national popular vote.^1 The compact goes into effect once the number of
electoral college votes from states that have joined the compact reaches
270 — and the Electoral College immediately becomes irrelevant. Already,
states comprising 205 electoral votes have gotten on board, and we need to
push hard right now to get the final few states we need before 2024.

A constitutional amendment abolishing the Electoral College is an
incredibly tall hill to climb. But passing the National Popular Vote
compact isn’t. Already 16 states and the District of Columbia have passed
the compact into law. That’s 205 electoral votes.^2

We just need a few more states to join the compact, and we’ll relegate the
Electoral College to the dustbin of history.

No more presidents losing the popular vote by millions, then going on to
appoint Supreme Court justices for life who don’t reflect popular will.

No more unpopular presidents eking out a win with tens of thousands of
votes in swing states.

No more presidential campaigns completely ignoring 80% of the U.S.
population.^3

Demand Progress Action has been advocating for the National Popular Vote
compact for years, and now that it’s close to reality, we need to turn up
the heat.
