Right now, we’re all feeling the effects of climate change.

Extreme heat is raging throughout the country, wildfires are spreading rapidly, and this past week there was a hurricane barreling towards LA for the first time in 84 years.

Meanwhile, Republican presidential candidates are still claiming climate change is a hoax. But the science is crystal clear - global warming is real and we’re already seeing it’s effects. This is an emergency and we have to treat it like one.

That’s why I’m pushing a new bipartisan bill called the Extreme Heat Emergency Act which simply adds extreme heat to the list of natural disaster emergencies that FEMA responds to. Extreme heat kills more people every year than any other natural disaster, and we keep hitting record high temperatures year after year. This bill would allow FEMA to provide assistance such as water and fans, mobile cooling centers, and cover medical expenses caused by heat-related illness during an extreme heat wave.

FEMA already does this for tornados, hurricanes, and floods. I believe that federal help should be available when we’re experiencing several days over 100 degree heat - especially if the power goes out like we saw in parts of the Central Valley during the recent heat wave.

I’m hopeful that we can pass this legislation by the end of the year so these resources will be available by next summer - which could be even hotter with climate change.
