This Women’s Equality Day, we want to recognize and uplift female voices across all industries. But as women continue to break barriers and glass ceilings, they’re still woefully underrepresented in local government.
According to recent data from the Center for American Women and Politics, women hold fewer than one-third of seats in local governments nationwide, which is comparable to their presence in state and federal offices.
That means the majority of decisions on abortion, bodily autonomy, reproductive freedom, and everything else are being driven by men.
Barriers are broken at the ground level. Gender diversity at the top of the ballot is only possible with gender diversity down the ballot. That’s why Run for Something works tirelessly to help young, diverse, progressive candidates from all walks of life run for office and win.
