Friends,
America is under attack from within.
There have been more mass shootings than days in 2019. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been 251 mass shootings with four or more victims in 217 days.
Garlic festivals. Walmarts. Bars and entertainment districts. Neighborhoods and communities across America. 33 innocent people killed and at least 68 injured just from the tragedies in Gilroy, El Paso, and Dayton alone. And in Chicago this weekend, a hospital stopped accepting patients after its trauma center was overwhelmed with shooting victims.
My heart breaks for all the victims and their families.
When I hold town halls and visit schools, folks young and old tell me they are afraid and anxious -- they feel nowhere is safe -- and they are calling out for us to take action. I share their feelings. I’ve had it with inaction, and I know you have too.
Add your name and join me in demanding Mitch McConnell allow a vote on common-sense gun-safety reform.
President Abraham Lincoln once said, “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”
Domestic terrorism -- fueled by hate and easy access to weapons of war -- is destroying our ability to freely go to places of worship, to see a movie, to drop our kids off at school, go shopping, and to pursue life, liberty, and happiness without fear.
Right now there is a common-sense gun-safety reform bill that has been sitting on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s desk for months.
I was proud to pass H.R. 8 back in March to achieve long-overdue universal background checks -- a baseline measure -- to address gun violence. While not a cure-all that will stop every shooting, the Senate passing it will provide both an urgent step forward and hope to the American people that our democracy and way of life is not yet lost.
Add your name and demand Mitch McConnell hold a vote in the Senate on common-sense gun-safety reform and to work with us on restoring a life of liberty that is free of gun violence for all Americans.
We must not falter. We must not lose faith. We must take action.
