My name is Shawn Wilson, and as a son of Louisiana, I bet we probably have a few things in common, John. I grew up in a middle-class family in Algiers, attended university in Lafayette, worked in the community after graduating, and became a devoted husband and father (and eventually grandfather) along the way.

Seven years ago, I was appointed Secretary of the Department of Transportation and Development to bring my unique brand of leadership to a struggling department.

At the time, Louisiana was facing record budget deficits and a slumping economy. The department was short on funds and hadn’t broken ground on many of the big infrastructure projects that we’d needed for decades. Well, we got to work bringing local, state, and federal leaders together in collaboration with business owners, farmers, and neighborhood associations. In the end, we got things done and created the largest infrastructure investment in our state’s history.

The bottom line is this: I love my home state of Louisiana, and I have spent my career working to make our state better — something I vow to continue as our next governor.
