Dear Friend,
Kenya’s Dadaab refugee complex is one of the largest in the world. Nearly three-quarters of the people who live there are young people under the age of 35. Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:
Tell Congress: It’s time to ban cluster munitions: [link removed] This summer, the Biden administration began sending cluster munitions to Ukraine. These deadly weapons disperse small bomblets across wide areas, causing devastating harm to civilians. Many countries have banned cluster munitions, and the United States must follow suit. Tell Congress to oppose cluster munitions for Ukraine and ban these weapons for good!
Negative narratives about the border are often false. We must embrace lived experience: [link removed] Politicians and the media often use stereotypes and dehumanizing language when talking about border communities. We shouldn't pay them heed, says AFSC's Pedro Rios. Instead, we should seek out the voices of migrants and other community members to hear their perspectives. “Imagine how much more informed our communities would be when we build our knowledge base on expressions of compassionate solidarity instead of fear and retaliation.” (San Diego Union-Tribune)
Win a chance to meet Joan Baez—and support AFSC!: [link removed] Joan Baez wants to fly one lucky winner and their guest to New York City to meet her at an exclusive screening of her new documentary “Joan Baez I Am a Noise.” And every entry supports AFSC! The more you donate, the more entries you earn for a chance to win and support AFSC. Learn more.
Meet the new American who is trying to bring Concord, New Hampshire together: [link removed] The Boston Globe profiles Fisto Ndayishimiye, a grassroots organizing intern with AFSC. Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Fisto came to New Hampshire in 2016 as a refugee. Now he’s working to improve life for all immigrants in the city.
