A year ago today, Texas’ trigger ban went into effect: making abortion essentially illegal, and performing an abortion a felony punishable by up to life in prison.
A year later, we’re seeing just how harmful this ban has been for women and children in our state. Texas now ranks 49th in the country for women’s health. The infant mortality rate in Texas has increased by 11.5% from last year. Women who experienced pregnancy complications and were refused abortions are SUING the state.
As a surgeon, I have seen firsthand the damage caused by these harmful decisions. Abortion care is healthcare – and we need a leader who knows how important it is to expand healthcare access instead of creating life-endangering obstacles.
