Letter from the Mayor
Dear Washingtonians,
We are just a few days away from the first day of school for thousands of young people across DC! We go into the new school year on the heels of encouraging news: students across grade levels made improvements in math and reading on the 2023 statewide assessment [ [link removed] ]. Now, we are ready to build on that progress.?
Earlier this week, we celebrated our high school students at the opening of the new, permanent home of the Advanced Technical Center [ [link removed] ] (ATC). Supported by professors from the University of the District of Columbia and Trinity Washington University, the ATC allows students to earn free college credits and industry certifications while remaining enrolled in their DC public school or public charter school. Like many of the Career and Technical Education programs at our high schools, the ATC represents a modern vocational learning model. I encourage you to listen to Genesis and her mom talk about how they made the choice to attend the ATC:

We are incredibly proud of Genesis, her classmates at the ATC, and her peers in high schools across DC who are going above and beyond to make themselves, their families, and our city proud. I encourage the families and caregivers of high school students to look closely at pages 14-17 in the Back to School Guide [ [link removed] ] so that, like Genesis's family, you can learn about the programs and opportunities that will help your child succeed.
I love back to school month because it is a special opportunity to show our children and teens how much we love them and how much we believe in them. I know that on Monday morning, teachers and principals will be greeting families and students with hugs, handshakes, high fives, and most important, a lot of joy. I can't wait to see all the smiling students on Monday morning. Let's make it a great first day.??
Sincerely,
Muriel Bowser
