Democrat,

This week the GOP hosted the first Republican presidential primary debate and the two-hour MAGA showcase proved once again how critical it is for our nation and our state's future to re-elect President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris next year. Anyone who subjected themselves to watching this debate saw Republicans arguing over who has the best plan to ban abortion nationwide, who can cut Social Security and Medicare the fastest, and whether America should side with Vladimir Putin or the people of Ukraine. What we did not hear was any real plan to improve the lives of middle class families. That's because President Biden and Democrats are already rebuilding our economy and putting our country on the right track after a disastrous four-years under President Trump. We cannot go back to a Republican White House. The American people aren’t interested in this grim vision for our future and that’s why voters will turn out in droves to reject it in November 2024

This week Governor Murphy signed a pioneering law, also known as the “Real Accountability for Consequences of Unlawful Trafficking of Firearms Act,” that holds gun traffickers responsible for the crimes committed using firearms they provide. The bill will allows New Jersey prosecutors to charge out-of-state gun traffickers, who have supplied around 80% of guns used for crimes in our state, for the harm their out-of-state conduct causes in New Jersey. This move expands upon New Jersey's strong gun safety laws and marks a significant step toward curbing gun violence in the state.

"Far too many New Jerseyans live with the daily fear that people in their communities who cannot legally possess guns can illegally obtain firearms and cause great harm,” said Governor Murphy. [[link removed]] “This bill allows us to hold those who illegally traffic those guns accountable for the harm that those weapons are used to cause. With today’s new law, New Jersey will become the first state in the nation to go after illegal gun traffickers in this way. This is yet another historic step to protect our children and families from gun violence, and we will continue to support long-term solutions that will break the cycle of violence once and for all."

Governor Murphy has remained committed to protecting New Jersey's residents from gun violence and this legislation sets a powerful precedent for other states to follow.

President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden traveled to Maui this week, where they met emergency responders, survivors, community members, as well as federal, state, and local officials, and saw firsthand the overwhelming destruction caused by the wildfires as well as the courage and resilience of the people of Maui. As the President made clear [[link removed]] , he is committed to delivering everything the people of Hawaiʻi need, and his Administration will be there as long as it takes to complete response efforts.

What happened in Maui is an undeniable example of the far-reaching consequences of climate change. These are not isolated incidents; they are part of a larger pattern of extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and environmental degradation that can be directly attributed to the changing climate. It is crucial to acknowledge that while the majority of climate scientists, international organizations, and governments recognize the urgency and severity of the climate crisis, there are still some, including many of the Republicans, who continue to insist that climate change is a hoax.

Democrats have taken a proactive stance in addressing this crisis, pushing for comprehensive policies to mitigate the effects of climate change and transition towards a sustainable future. Their initiatives encompass not only immediate responses to the impacts of climate change, such as disaster relief and preparedness, but also the long-term goal of building a green economy by investing in renewable energy sources, advancing clean technologies, and supporting initiatives that promote energy efficiency.

Ultimately, the situation in Maui serves as a stark reminder that the effects of climate change are already here, affecting communities and ecosystems in profound ways. Addressing this crisis requires a united effort, one that transcends partisan divides and acknowledges the reality of the situation.
