Dear John,

Six months on, UNHCR continues to provide hope to survivors hit by February’s deadly earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria.

The 7.7 and 7.5 magnitude quakes close to the border of Türkiye and Syria in early February 2023 claimed an estimated 60,000 lives, while tens of thousands were injured. Across the two countries, a staggering 23.8 million people were affected by the disaster, including many who had already fled their homes to escape Syria’s civil war.

UNHCR has been on the ground since day one, providing emergency aid. Here’s what we’ve achieved so far with the support of people like you:

Around 3 million emergency relief items, like blankets, tents, hygiene kits and sleeping bags, distributed
Counselling and support services for around 100,000 people
Resettlement for 8,200 refugees, approximately half of whom are earthquake-affected refugees.
Cash assistance, to help pay for items such as food, rent and heating, for 6,300 households
Legal support, on matters of civil law and access to rights, for more than 3,000 people. Six months on, people are still in need of shelter, basic household items, medical care and psychological support. Despite the immense level of destruction and devastation, UNHCR continues to provide immediate protection and relief, along with lasting solutions for vulnerable refugees and displaced Syrians.

On behalf of all the people we protect, we’d like to thank you for your solidarity and support. You’re helping us provide life-saving assistance to the millions of people hit by the earthquake in both Türkiye and Syria.
