It’s been more than 13 years since the disastrous Supreme Court decision
Citizens United v. FEC, which allowed for a surge of corporate spending
and dark money donations in political campaigns.

In that time, super PACs and mega-corporations have been able to translate
their dollars into political influence. Groups like Big Pharma, the fossil
fuel industry, and other corporate interests can write big campaign checks
to elected leaders — and hope to receive favorable policies in exchange.

John, this is a
terrible system of campaign finance that has allowed the rich and powerful
to buy our elections. And it is a top priority of mine to fix it. It’s why
my first bill in Congress was the House version of the McCain-Feingold
campaign finance reform legislation. And it’s also why I’m the lead author
of the bill to repeal Citizens United.

I am also proud to say that we are not accepting corporate PAC
contributions in our campaign, and that the average contribution for my
Senate campaign is $35.

Not millions or thousands of dollars, coming in from corporations or dark
money donors.

But folks chipping in $5, $25, or $100 of their hard-earned money in
support of our campaign and what we stand for.

Accountability. Democracy. Leveling the playing field for every
Californian.

I say it all the time: I’m so proud of this grassroots team and deeply
honored by the support it gives to our movement.

Together, we’re rejecting the massive corporate influence in our political
system. We will reform the system, hopefully passing my Constitutional
Amendment to overturn Citizens United. We’re going to unrig our system.
