John, we need to talk about book bans.
|
In the last school year alone, more than 1,400 book bans were proposed at the state level. With Republicans focused on advancing their dangerous and backward agenda, that number is likely to rise.
I’ve always loved to read. And, as a mother, I am particularly saddened by these recent attacks on books and literature. I rely on books to show my children new perspectives and it pains me to think that my grandchildren may not have the same access my children did. Books like The Hate U Give, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and The 57 Bus were huge for my kids and I would consider their education incomplete without them.

Books can open doors for us, show us possibilities for the future we never thought possible, or reveal parts of ourselves we didn’t know existed. No one should be denied that experience or robbed of the tools to find their home in the world and their place in our movements for justice. But that’s exactly what the GOP is trying to do.
|
That’s why I’m personally asking you to sign this petition to speak out against Republican-led book bans. Will you add your name now?

These book banning efforts strike at the foundation of our democracy, John – they’re an attempt to deny the diverse voices demanding to be heard in every area of our society. Those are the same voices we need at every level of government to protect our rights and ensure all our communities are fairly represented and equitably served.
|
Our Emerge community is fighting day in and day out to achieve real representation for our communities and to build an inclusive democracy in the U.S. for the FIRST time. In fact, this past spring, Emerge candidates won 6 school board races in Vermont and 17 in Oregon – and 16 more candidates are on the ballot in November. The success of our schools is crucial to the success of our country. That’s why we can’t afford to ignore these book bans and why I’m counting on you to add your voice today. So please:

Will you add your name to our petition now to speak out against GOP-led book bans?
