Advocating for Our Farmers

This year, Congress will consider the 2023 Farm Bill, which serves as a comprehensive legislative framework for U.S. agricultural and food policy, impacting everything from farm subsidies and food assistance programs to rural development and conservation efforts. While Congress is out of session, I set aside time to meet with members of our agriculture and forestry before the important vote to gain a better understanding of their needs.

ImageOn Tuesday, I joined the Texas Farm Bureau at the Stephen F. Austin State Beef and Poultry Centers to meet with students who are gaining hands-on experience in cattle production and the poultry industry. Our day started at the Poultry Research Center where Dr. John Michael Mehaffey briefed us on how they are innovating in feed additives, poultry health, and environmental stewardship. I was particularly impressed to learn from District 9 State Director John Griffith that this is one of the rare programs where students work and gain real-world experience simultaneously.

We then transitioned to the Beef Center for a roundtable discussion. Dr. Erin Brown illuminated the center's unique work with a herd of 25 cattle, sending those feeder cattle to university-affiliated feed lots. Douglas Smith, Chair of the SFA Agriculture Department, highlighted the influx of resources since joining the UT system, pointing out that every SFA student has a unique opportunity to study their own animal.

Finally, I had the chance to field questions from Hudson ISD FFA members on topics like the Farm Bill and advocacy in agriculture. Laramie Adams of the Texas Farm Bureau shared crucial information about programs for farmers, emphasizing the success of the 2018 Farm Bill and the need to build upon it.

Working with members of our farm and ranch community, we are striving to create a stronger, more sustainable future for Texas agriculture. The importance of adequately funding and supporting our agriculture industry cannot be emphasized enough. My collaborative efforts here in the Texas 17th District will help me secure the resources needed for Central and East Texas to flourish.

A Century of Service

ImageThis past Thursday, joined the Groesbeck and Crockett Lions Clubs to celebrate the organization. In Central Texas, few community service organizations boast a legacy as enduring and transformative as the Lions Club, which has steadfastly served its community since 1917. The organization's ethos truly comes to life in local chapters where compassionate people unite, roll up their sleeves, and collaborate to enhance their communities.

In Groesbeck, the local Lions Club is already gearing up for the back-to-school season by providing eyeglasses, school supplies, and scholarships to offer students the best possible opportunities for success. It's a privilege to represent a community so deeply committed to making a positive impact on its neighbors. I eagerly anticipate celebrating future milestones with our dedicated Lions Club members.

Waco Workforce Development

On Thursday, I toured Amazon's newly opened Waco Fulfillment Center, a cutting edge facility that is already making a tremendous impact in our local economy. Spanning approximately 700,000 square feet this state-of-the-art center has employed around 2,000 people, bringing 1,000 new jobs to Waco. This is not just a win for Waco but a major leap forward for the prosperity of our entire region.

ImageSo much of our modern economy relies on e-commerce, and quick local delivery is an essential piece to keeping that moving. Waco is a prime location for this fulfillment center because of its ready access to all the major metropolitan areas in the state, making it ideal for Amazon. I enjoyed meeting dedicated employees who have gotten this Center up and running in the last few months. During my visit, it was clear that the new Waco Fulfillment Center represents a long-term high-value investment in our Central Texas community.

This kind of economic development is what we need to keep Texas at the forefront of business innovation and job growth. Companies like Amazon are helping to turbocharge our economic landscape, and it's this kind of investment that will ensure Waco continues to be a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
Sincerely,
