By any measure, New Jersey families pay some of the highest tax rates in the country. That puts a squeeze on all of our communities, but our senior citizens are especially hurt when trying to plan for retirement.

That’s why recently, I was proud to announce my support for The Senior Housing IRA Act of 2020, a bill focused on cutting taxes and making sure seniors can afford to stay in New Jersey instead of packing up for warmer weather.

My bill would allow senior citizens to completely avoid capital gains taxes when selling their home — and to instead be able to invest that money into their retirement funds. It’s a common-sense solution that will have a real impact on people’s lives.

We need to do everything we can to limit the tax burden on our families. The Senior Housing IRA Act of 2020 is a practical solution to part of this problem, and it’s a first step towards building a New Jersey that everyone can live in.

This is the sort of problem-solving I took to Congress. I’m not in Washington to chase headlines — this is about our communities and the real progress we can build together.
