Friend,

Last week, one of our colleagues was meandering through the aisles of Costco, as one does, when he got tangled in a rack of Top Gun and Disney Princess Halloween costumes. He left the glorious A/C of the store, stepped back into the heatwave outside and his playlist shuffled to Wham’s “Last Christmas”.

This is all to say: We’re pretty sure that August is a fake month that is untethered from linear chronology (and science needs to get to the bottom of this). Meanwhile, Congress is still on its summer recess and we’re getting ready to move our legislative priorities forward.

In case you’re feeling the strange timeless vibes as well, we thought it might help to reiterate where we stand on the most pressing issues:

Our “Back to Congress” Priority List

Confirming FCC Nominees Anna Gomez and Commissioner Geoffrey Starks
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has remained in an unprecedented 2–2 deadlock since January 2021, the result of efforts by the phone, cable and broadcast lobbies to hamstring the agency that oversees their businesses. After years of advocacy from Free Press Action and our allies, we finally have our best chance yet to get a fully functional FCC. We’re calling on Majority Leader Schumer to hold confirmation votes ASAP.

Sustaining Our Public Media to Strengthen Our Democracy
Our nation’s public-media system produces high-quality journalism but is one of the most poorly funded in the world. The Biden administration has proposed more than $500 million to keep local public-television and radio stations on the air — but some House Republicans have proposed zeroing out funding. We’re urging Congress to not only meet the White House’s proposal, but exceed it.

Passing FANFSA to Protect Your Privacy
There is bipartisan support for the Fourth Amendment Is Not For Sale Act (FANFSA), a crucial bill that would stop companies and law enforcement from accessing our private data without a warrant. Our constitutional rights are on the line: We’re demanding that Congress pass FANFSA to safeguard our personal information.

Supporting High-Speed Internet Access by Funding the ACP
High-speed internet is an essential but too-expensive utility. More than 20 million low-income households rely on the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) to ensure they have the ability to participate in everyday life, but the program will run out of money unless Congress acts soon. We’re keeping the pressure on to keep the funding flowing.

There's a lot to be proud of and a lot of tough fights still ahead. None of this work is possible without your attention and your support. We are truly grateful for everything you’ve done so far, and we’d like to ask you to stay with us as we move into a jam-packed fall. Could you chip in today to make sure we have the resources we need to pick up the pace?
