Are you ready to join a cohort of more than 550 leaders in news and media?
Alumni of Poynter’s Leadership Academy for Women in Media tout the program’s community as one of the best benefits of the entire experience. You get amplified when you succeed, buoyed when you falter, and receive practical support during the regular ups and downs of media leadership.
Here's how some recent grads describe the cohort: |
|
“It was a gift to be able to take the week to be surrounded by strong women — most of whom are going through all the same things in their very different newsrooms — and to learn from inspirational faculty who have each carved their own paths in the industry and beyond.”
— Emily Jan, Deputy Director of Visuals, San Francisco Chronicle, March 2023 alum |
|
|
“I was amazed at how much a group of 30 women could connect in such an authentic and invigorating way in such a short period of time. It’s apparent that Poynter puts an incredible amount of thought into putting these cohorts together.”
— LA Blake, Senior SEO Manager, Hearst Magazines, May 2023 alum |
|
|
“The idea of hundreds of women pollinating the journalism industry with tools and strategies to transform organizational culture is truly exciting, and I feel privileged to be a part of it.”
– Yukari Kane, Co-Founder and CEO, Prison Journalism Project, May 2023 alum |

Poynter’s Leadership Academy for Women in Media is not just a week of leadership training for those who directly manage people. It’s an opportunity to join an instant professional network based on shared experiences and values that lasts a lifetime.
Feel more connected to yourself, your purpose and your peers. Apply for the 2024 program by Friday, Sept. 8. |
We will host three leadership academies in 2024, each open to 30 participants: March 18-22; May 20-24; and Sept. 23-27. There is one application (which includes a letter of recommendation) to seat all three cohorts.
If accepted, you will travel to Poynter in St. Petersburg, Florida, for five days of intensive, transformational learning. You will form deep relationships with your cohort of 30 people and join an alumni group of more than 550 leaders. With the help of Poynter faculty, you will process feedback from your boss, direct reports and peers; explore your personal communication styles as a manager; and chart your unique, winding career path based on how you define success. |
Our program is designed for those who directly manage people and are within their first five years of formal leadership experience. We welcome all English-speaking women, including cis and trans women, as well as nonbinary and gender nonconforming journalists who are comfortable in a space that centers the experiences of women in media. |
Kate Cox led the academy in 2023 and will return as program director in 2024. Guest instructors and keynote speakers for 2024 will be announced closer to the seminar dates.
Read a Q&A with Cox about her stewardship of the program and see her tips for putting together a strong application. |
