Friend,

It’s been almost 60 years since Martin Luther King Jr. gave his historic
“I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the
March on Washington and, today, those words that once inspired a
generation of Americans to accelerate important civil rights reforms once
more underscore the heightened political tensions and attacks that now
threaten so many of our fundamental rights:

“We have [...] come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce
urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to
take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism.”

– Martin Luther King, Jr.

“The fierce urgency of now” is exactly why I’m honored to be joining
Arndrea Waters King, Martin Luther King III, Yolanda King, Rev. Al
Sharpton, and others tomorrow to celebrate the 60th anniversary of this
historic occasion. Together, we’ll remind the public that while we’ve made
great progress towards King’s vision for America, we are still far from
achieving it.

[ [link removed] ]I encourage you to tune in to the day’s festivities by streaming the
celebration on People For’s website beginning at 8:00 AM ET (I’ll be
speaking around 8:15 AM) >>

Saturday’s events will be an opportunity to recenter the progressive
movement following a disastrous Supreme Court term and as state
legislators continue the erosion of our rights, including those for the
LGBTQ community, reproductive freedoms, voting rights, and more. This
event is not just a commemoration of Dr. King’s legacy, it is a
continuation of the movement for fundamental freedoms in our democracy.

In addition to tuning in to the livestream, there are three easy ways for
you to engage in our efforts to advance MLK Jr.’s vision for America:

 1. [ [link removed] ]Sign our petition urging Congress to pass the Freedom to Vote Act –
a bill that would strengthen the fundamental right to vote for all
Americans >>
 2. [ [link removed] ]Learn more about our Defend the Black Vote program – People For’s
groundbreaking program which uses peer-to-peer texting to connect
directly with Black men who have failed to vote in the majority of the
last three elections. Since we launched this campaign in 2020, we have
connected with over 4 million Black men in key states across the
country to provide them with the information necessary to participate
in their elections; providing a verifiable boost to voter turnout in
these states.
 3. [ [link removed] ]Donate today to support our ongoing efforts to fight back against
Republican extremism and their ongoing attempts to erode and weaken
our fundamental rights and freedoms >>

Thanks for all that you do,

Svante Myrick
